BASS: Hot Chip – Look At Where We Are (Major Lazer Remix)

LAZER-STRIKES-BACK-Vol.-1

Back in March, the mighty Major Lazer dropped their remix EP Lazer Strikes Back Vol 1. We’ve been revisiting the EP recently, and re-remembered this absolutely overlooked Hot Chip remix. Diplo and co deliver their trademark wob wob bass, sitting perfectly behind Alexis Taylor’s soothing voice. This is one of the reasons we Love Major Lazer so much – the club bangers are obviously amazing, but it’s these more laid back jams that really set him out from the crowd. Who would have thought that Trap could be so mellow? Fave bit – 3.00 mins in when it breaks down into a Reggae skank.

BASS: Disclosure – You & Me feat Eliza Doolittle (Baauer Remix)

baauer_650-430

It only seemed a matter of time before the two powerhouses of new Bass music, Disclosure and Baauer, teamed up on something. Here’s the suitably timed remix of Disclosure’s new single You & Me by Mr ‘Harlem Shake’ Baauer, complete with rolling basslines, house breaks and a sprinkling of the sparse atmosphere of Trap.

Disclosure released their debut album ‘Settle’ this week to much critical acclaim.

Expect to hear this remix melting your face in all the clubs this weekend. We’ll certainly be playing it in our set at West London Bass Club this weekend.

Here’s the original if you haven’t heard it yet (where have you been??) – in our opinion, one of the best tracks on the new album:

BASS: Lady Leshurr – Upset

LadyLeshurrLyeah

UK MC Lady Leshurr drops a new jam with filthy basslines and spitting grime vocals. Reminiscent of early Dizzee and already tipped by The Streets’ Mike Skinner as ‘One To Watch’ in The Guardian. Instant love.

Robot Koch – Supreme Sound From Berlin

SUPREME SOUND FROM BERLIN

After Supreme Sound From Paris featuring Onra and Walter Mecca, and Supreme Sound From London featuring Deft and Flako, Skullcandy launches Supreme Sound from Berlin EP featuring legendary Berlin producer Robot Koch.

Skullcandy’s ‘Supreme Sound From’ series forms part of many new exciting Skullcandy music projects coming up in 2013, collaborating with the brightest young talents from the current European electro scene and beyond. This project focuses once again on production quality, true to its Skullcandy Supreme Sound mantra – attacking bass, precision highs, natural vocals.

Koch has picked up critical acclaim for his past releases, picking up the attention of Dazed and Confused (“A gothic galactic aesthetic of ten ton beats and space age melodies”),XLR8R, (“A middle ground between the far-out experimentation of Brainfeeder and the futuristic pop of artists like Jamie Lidell, The xx, and Jimmy Edgar”) and even the late great John Peel of BBC Radio 1 fame (“Wonderful and strange – pop music from the future”).

For the Supreme Sound From Berlin EP, Koch has calibrated killer bass with intricate instrumentals, teaming up with his friends from Arcadeon and with Project Mooncircle labelmate Sieren. The EP also includes a new solo track called ‘Starfish’ as well as two collaborative tracks: ‘Corridors of Time, created with his friends Arcadeon (aka Sneaky from UK Nu-Hip Hop pioneers Fingathing & US multi instrumentalist Dan Stetich) and ‘Melville’, a team effort with Berlin producer Sieren, recently signed to Project Mooncircle for his debut split 12 inch vinyl.

BASS: Rudimental ft. Ella Eyre Waiting All Night (BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge)

Rudimental_image

By now we’ve all heard the tune – something of a landmark for bass music – Rudimental is at No.1 with this stone cold jungly banger.

But check the above kickass live version from their recent BBC Radio 1 live session. Ella Eyre’s voice is massive live with so  much soul and power behind it. We’re slowly falling in love with her. Strangely, for someone who is currently at No.1 , she only has about 3,000 likes on her facebook page. Head over and give her a like – we’re expecting big things from her.

Here’s their rather good Live Lounge cover of Paramore’s ‘Now’, complete with samples of The Beat’s Mirror In The Bathroom and Bob Marley’s Sun Is Shining.

Rudimental’s debut album ‘Home’ is out next week 29th April and is available to pre-order here.

Also check their free download of Hell Could Freeze with vocals from shouty female rapper du jour Angel Haze:

BASS: SNOOP LION FT MILEY CYRUS – ASHTRAYS AND HEARTBREAKS

ashtrays

So here we have the latest from Snoop Dogg’s ‘Snoop Lion’ project.

Here at Bandsxbass we were pretty sceptical about Snoop Dogg’s reincarnation as a reggae artist. At first it seemed quite cynical and felt like Snoop was just bored of Rap and felt like jumping on the success of acts like Major Lazer, M.I.A and Santigold. Then they dropped the first few singles, most notably Lighters Up… and they weren’t half bad.

So, the more we learn about it, the more we’re coming round to it. After all, who predicted that a young white American dude called Diplo would come along and change Reggae/Dub/Dancehall forever with Major Lazer?

Snoop himself has said in press conferences that he doesn’t want to steal the heart of Reggae and run back to the US and get rich. And with the announcement of Diplo himself being at the production reigns – this record actually might be some cop. Time will tell, but we’re looking forward to how this whole Snoop Lion thing is going to pan out. Was it perhaps a step backwards releasing this latest tune with the Miley Cyrus of all people?

Would it not have been more authentic to record with a local Jamaican artist? Miley is pretty much the definition of an all American girl – her biggest track is called ‘Party In The USA’ . It’s an interesting move, but most importantly, it sounds good. So who really cares?

We’re looking forward to the Reincarnated documentary as well, not least as it’s directed by Andy Capper, Vice Magazine’s Editor in Chief. Click here for a good recent interview with him and London’s Le Cool magazine.
